Au cours d’une déambulation poétique dans les lieux emblématiques de la vie de Maurice Ravel (1875-1937), le compositeur du "Boléro" se révèle à travers sa musique, dirigée notamment par Klaus Mäkelä et jouée par de grands interprètes français.
Qui était Maurice Ravel, que l’on décrivait comme un dandy timide et élégant, consciencieux et solitaire dont on célèbre en 2025 le 150e anniversaire de la naissance ? Né en 1875 et mort en 1937, le compositeur "répugnait à parler de lui-même", écrivait le musicologue Roland-Manuel en introduction de l’Esquisse autobiographique que le compositeur accepta de lui dicter en 1928, faute de consentir à un entretien. Outre ce court document, qui illustre avant tout la discrétion dont il fit preuve tout au long de sa vie, le père du Boléro a laissé pour seuls témoignages les quelques écrits, photos et courts films où il apparaît.
Évocation musicale
Le duo de réalisateurs François-René Martin et Gordon a imaginé une évocation purement musicale du père du Boléro. Protagonistes sans paroles, l’Orchestre de Paris et le maestro Klaus Mäkelä, le pianiste Bertrand Chamayou, la soprano colorature Sabine Devieilhe, le quatuor Modigliani, le chœur Accentus et sa cheffe Laurence Equilbey, la soprano Marie-Laure Garnier, la violoniste Raphaëlle Moreau et la pianiste Célia Oneto Bensaid s’emparent de ses chefs-d’œuvre mais aussi de pièces moins connues. À chacun des chapitres du film, une partition jouée témoigne d'un aspect particulier de sa vie et de sa personnalité. Tourné dans la maison-musée de Montfort-l'Amaury (où Ravel vécut jusqu’à sa mort), à l’église de Ciboure (où il fut baptisé), au couvent Sainte-Marie de la Tourette, construit par Le Corbusier à Évreux, et à la Philharmonie de Paris, ce film ancre chaque œuvre dans un univers esthétique riche en jeux de lumières et de couleurs, singulier palimpseste où se superposent des images du passé et du présent.
