"Mon enfance me paraît très grise", disait-il. Pour échapper à une vie bruxelloise bourgeoise et triste, entre une mère mélancolique et un père absent, le petit Georges Remi, dont les initiales formeront bientôt le pseudonyme Hergé, s'évade en croquant des héros aux aventures extraordinaires. Le scoutisme lui permet aussi de goûter à une vie plus "colorée". Précoce, il dessine pour les publications du mouvement. Tout jeune homme, il se voit confier un supplément jeunesse, Le petit vingtième, sous la férule de l'abbé Vallez, homme à la fois moderne et… mussoliniste. C'est là que paraîtront les premières aventures de Tintin et Milou. La sûreté du trait, l'inventivité, le rythme trépidant des péripéties sont déjà là. Mais le jeune Georges Remi raconte sans beaucoup de recul ni de documentation l'URSS et l'Afrique de l'époque, influencé par les convictions rétrogrades de l'abbé. Il finira par secouer ce joug et dira plus tard au sujet de Tintin au Congo : "C'était du racisme mais sans le savoir." Enguirlandé par Haddock D'album en album, ce bourreau de travail a inventé la bande dessinée moderne, grâce à son sens du cadrage, du scénario et du mouvement, sa ligne claire, qui rend l'action limpide, ses cliffhanger en fin de chaque page, son introduction maîtrisée de la couleur… Autant d'innovations qui marqueront des générations de lecteurs et de dessinateurs. Tintin, son intrépide reporter, connaît d'emblée un succès phénoménal (200 millions d'albums vendus à ce jour). Pendant un demi-siècle, Hergé vivra à ses côtés. Il se sentira fasciné mais aussi tyrannisé par sa remuante créature, enchaînant les planches pour un public qui en réclame toujours plus. Il s'est d'ailleurs souvent caricaturé en pantin manipulé par Tintin ou en tâcheron enguirlandé par Haddock, Tournesol et consorts. Nourri d'interviews, d'archives et de dessins inédits, ce documentaire navigue avec poésie dans la vie tourmentée de cet artiste génial et perfectionniste et dans son œuvre foisonnante. Il explore son trait grâce de fluides séquences animées et dévoile des aspects moins connus de sa sensibilité artistique, notamment son goût pour l'abstraction et le graphisme. Il offre aussi une relecture précieuse de nombreux albums, montrant l'influence des soubresauts de l'époque et de la vie personnelle de Hergé sur les pérégrinations de Tintin.
