Au commencement étaient les aurochs, immortalisés par l’art pariétal. Puis vint le temps de la domestication. En régentant la vie sexuelle des bovins, l’homme s’octroyait ainsi la possibilité d’améliorer la race. Au XXe siècle, qui voit l’invention de l’agriculture industrielle, le phénomène connaît un coup d’accélérateur grâce à l’insémination artificielle. Les tests de descendance, mis en œuvre pour élire les meilleurs reproducteurs, accouchent d’un véritable star-system et… de maladies de la consanguinité, la semence des taureaux les plus en vue inondant le marché (à l’image du vaillant Jocko Besné, né en 1994 dans le Morbihan et père de quatre cent mille femelles sans avoir jamais sailli une comparse). Au début des années 2000, une nouvelle étape est franchie avec le séquençage du génome d’une vache. Désormais, il s’agit pour les éleveurs, guidés par des algorithmes, d’acquérir le sperme du mâle génétiquement idéal pour leurs femelles. Mais puisque l'on peut décrypter le génome des bovins, pourquoi ne pas le modifier ? En Argentine, des chercheurs sont allés jusqu’à donner naissance à Rosita, une vache porteuse de deux gènes de femmes censés reproduire les propriétés du lait maternel humain.Vaches sur mesure Musclée ? Sans cornes ? Avec des petits pis ? Grâce aux progrès de la génétique, il n’y a plus qu’à choisir son modèle et passer commande. Tourné dans les élevages et les laboratoires, auprès d’agriculteurs, de généticiens et de philosophes, ce film dresse un état des lieux stupéfiant du pouvoir de l’homme sur le vivant, qu’il modèle selon ses désirs, et s’interroge sur le sens des rapports qu’entretiennent les humains avec les bovins, soumis à des cadences infernales.
