Un fantôme rôde par la planète, le fantôme de Lénine, écrit en 2002 l'historien britannique Robert Payne. La trace qu'il a laissée dans l'histoire du monde est infiniment plus perceptible que celle laissée par Alexandre de Macédoine, Tamerlan ou Napoléon, car lui seul a changé le cours de l'Histoire. Contrairement à ce que la chute de l'URSS, dont on fêtera en décembre le 20e anniversaire, pourrait laisser croire, ce fantôme semble toujours rôder. En témoigne la question récurrente de savoir s'il faut retirer le corps de Vladimir Ilitch Oulianov (1870-1924) de son mausolée de la place Rouge, une décision qu'aucun dirigeant du Kremlin ne s'est pour l'instant risqué à prendre... Cette ferveur pour le père de la révolution bolchévique est-elle l'ultime écho d'un passé révolu ou l'expression d'un authentique sentiment collectif au pays oÆu les statues qui le représentent et les rues qui portent son nom se comptent encore par centaines ?Depuis l'effondrement de l'Etat qu'il bâtit en 1917 au milieu des ruines, de nombreux documents disponibles éclairent d'un jour nouveau des pans entiers de la vie et de l'action de celui que l'historiographie récente dépeint volontiers comme un tueur sanguinaire responsable de toutes les exactions. Ces documents permettent surtout de remettre en valeur la longue série de réformes démocratiques dont il est à l'origine et qui, pour la plupart, ne seront adoptées dans les pays occidentaux que beaucoup plus tard : la nationalisation des banques, la création d'une inspection du travail, l'avènement des congés payés et de la journée de huit heures, la séparation de l'Eglise et de l'Etat, l'instauration du mariage civil, l'abrogation du code pénal tsariste qui entraîna une dépénalisation de l'homosexualité, le droit au divorce, et enfin la liberté d'avortement.Ni hagiographie caricaturale ni pamphlet haineux, le livre de Jean-Jacques Marie redonne la place dans l'Histoire qui lui est due à ce génie politique d'une intelligence prodigieuse qui ne vivait que pour la révolution. Une somme indispensable à l'heure oÆu la crise financière rend plus percutantes encore ses analyses sur le capitalisme.

Ces documents permettent surtout de remettre en valeur la longue série de réformes démocratiques dont il est à l'origine et qui, pour la plupart, ne seront adoptées dans les pays occidentaux que beaucoup plus tard : la nationalisation des banques, la création d'une inspection du travail, l'avènement des congés payés et de la journée de huit heures, la séparation de l'Eglise et de l'Etat, l'instauration du mariage civil, l'abrogation du code pénal tsariste qui entraîna une dépénalisation de l'homosexualité, le droit au divorce, et enfin la liberté d'avortement.Ni hagiographie caricaturale ni pamphlet haineux, le livre de Jean-Jacques Marie redonne la place dans l'Histoire qui lui est due à ce génie politique d'une intelligence prodigieuse qui ne vivait que pour la révolution. Une somme indispensable à l'heure oÆu la crise financière rend plus percutantes encore ses analyses sur le capitalisme."
